New National Energy Efficiency Standards For Private Rented Homes

Landlords will be prohibited from renting out properties that fail to meet minimum energy efficiency criteria under new national rules.

From 1st April 2018 rented homes in England and Wales must have a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E.

Initially this will apply only to new tenancies and renewals before being extended to all existing tenancies by 2020. Landlords will therefore not legally be able to rent out homes with an EPC rating of F or G although some exemptions may apply.

Further information is available from the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) – ‘Domestic landlord guidance’ document available at www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-private-rented-property-minimum-standard-landlord-guidance-documents
