Call for Second World War veterans

Armed Forces Day celebrations at Victoria Park last month

Do you know someone who served for any branch of the Armed Forces during the Second World War?

St Helens Council wants to hear from anyone who served during the war as it plans for commemorative events ahead of the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War in 1939.

Councillor Lynn Clarke, St Helens Armed Forces Champion, said: “I would like to ensure that those brave men and women who served during the Second World War are invited to attend any events held in the borough in the coming years that commemorate the sacrifices their generation made to protect and rights and freedoms we have today.

“I would ask Second World War Veterans, including those who served with the Merchant Navy, WRENS, WRAC or WRAF; who would like to be kept aware of future Second World War anniversary events to get in touch with us. We are also interested in hearing from those who served in industry (such as munition workers and Bevin Boys), the Intelligence Service (such as Bletchley Park), fire, police, and health services, Home Guard and the Women’s Land Army or other Women’s Auxiliary Services.”

To register to receive invitations for any future events held in the borough to commemorate Second World War anniversaries, please send your name, Armed Service details and contact details to Simon Cousins by post to Armed Forces Covenant, Victoria Square, St Helens, WA10 1HP or email contactcentre@sthelens.gov.uk.

Any contact information supplied is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018 and will be held confidentially and securely in line with the St Helens Council’s Armed Forces Covenant Second World War Veteran Group Data Protection Privacy Notice published on the council’s website.
