The A Team

St. Helens Sutton A.C. Senior Men Qualify for Nationals!

This weekend saw St. Helens Sutton A.C. take on the top teams in the North at the Northern Road Relays held at Sport City, Manchester.

Sutton had two teams of six competing, with the A team comprising of Matt Crehan, Jon-Jo Doherty, Tom Griffiths, David Twigg, Ste Anders and Jake Healy, the B team was made up of Matt Blake, Will Beesley, Tom Upton, Leon Hill, Chris Birket and Chris Taylor.

The B Team

Crehan began with his usual fast start taking out a demanding lead which couldn’t be closed, providing Doherty with a strong gap over some of the best runners in the North. Doherty slipped to 4th, before, in the final 300m putting in a powerful kick to put Sutton into second. Griffiths then ran an impressive 3rd leg to bring the team home in 4th before handing over to Twigg, who after a slight injury mid-week kept the team in the top 15. Marathon man Anders then powered around the 6.8km course keeping the team in 17th and Healy brought the team home in 24th qualifying Sutton for the National Road Relays in Birmingham on the 6th October.

In the B team, Blake had a strong run on first leg before handing over to Beesley, who though now focusing on the sprints, still put in a great performance, fellow former footballer Upton then powered round on leg 3. Hill then put in the 4th fastest leg of the team, before handing over to fastest man of the day, in the B team, Birkett, before Taylor brought the team home with a strong finish, passing 4 runners in the final 400m.

Friday night also saw Jade Smith destroy her 5km PB as she returned to the road after a long track season, taking an impressive 33 seconds off her PB running an impressive time of 18:29 at the Lancaster Power of 5K.

St. Helens Sutton A.C. formally known as Sutton Harriers St. Helens, is one of the oldest athletic clubs in the country established in 1899.

Sutton A.C. is open to all ages and abilities meeting at Sutton Leisure Centre track at 6:15pm every Tuesday and Thursday evening.

There is an adults beginners group suitable for those just starting out and the kids Acorn beginners group for those aged 8 upwards, there is a waiting listing for juniors so it is worth contacting the club via their Facebook page.

St Helens Sutton has seen many internationals and Olympians compete for them over the years, and the coaches and officials are always ready to help every athlete reach their full potential.
