Mud, Hills & Wins – Cross Country Season underway for St. Helens Sutton

This weekend saw the first cross country races of the season with a great team of juniors heading to Wythenshaw Park in Manchester, while one of the strongest Sutton Senior teams raced at home on Sherdley Park.

In Manchester the races began with the U13’s Boys with a strong team performance. Gabrial Mullen was first home, followed by Liam Johnson and Jacob Colley. Will Vose and XC debutant Charlie Griffiths rounded out the team. In the U13 Girls Chloe-Leigh Mark, Niamh Warring and Daisy Ward showed a strong team effort working together across the muddy course. Michael Dobson was the only U15 Boy having a great run finishing 14th. Lucy Clitheroe, Taylor Massey and Jessica Bairstow competed in the U15 Girl’s. Charlie Roberts and Michael Brussels both had good runs in the U17 Men’s race. And Ian Roberts was the only senior in Manchester as the others raced at home.

At Sherdely, Jon-Jo Doherty ran a tactically sound race against some of Liverpool’s best to take the win, he was followed back by Dave Twigg, Liam Todd in his first debut for Sutton, Ste Anders, Leon Hill and John Greenall rounding out the counting six and placing Sutton as 2nd team home. Next back was Christ Taylor followed by Greg Williams. Jade Smith was the first Sutton lady home and 3rd woman overall, Amy Corfield wasn’t far behind in 5th. Chris Reid also making his Sutton debut rounded out the Sutton team.

On Sunday, Matt Crehan competed at the Manchester Half Marathon having an impressive run taking 3 minutes off his personal best to run 65min 35seconds and placing 8th out of 15,000 runners.

Sutton A.C. is open to all ages and abilities meeting at Sutton Leisure Centre track at 6:15pm every Tuesday and Thursday evening.

There is an adults beginners group suitable for those just starting out and the kids Acorn beginners group for those aged 8 upwards, there is a waiting listing for juniors so it is worth contacting the club via their Facebook page.

St Helens Sutton has seen many internationals and Olympians compete for them over the years, and the coaches and officials are always ready to help every athlete reach their full potential.
