Heritage Walk – St Helens Cemetery

St.Helens Cemetery is a wealth of local history. The final resting place for industrialists, military heroes, sportsmen (and women , including our world class footballer Lily Parr). Five Policemen killed in the line of duty, victims of 19th and 20th century mining accidents, chemical work explosions, railroad accident, the famous and not so famous are interned in the cemetery.

Do you know how old the cemetery is, who designed it, who was the landscape designer?

Do you know who was the first person to be buried and where is the grave?

Why are all those grassed areas in the old section of the cemetery?

How many Commonwealth War Graves are there in the cemetery?

What is that circle of hedges at the top of the drive, is there something behind it?

If you want to learn more about the history of the cemetery join us for a walking heritage tour at 11am on Sunday 3rd September 2017. A gentle walk starting at the Rainford Road entrance car park.
