St Helens Schoolboys ready to return

St Helens Association for PE & Sport have teamed up with David Campbell Soccer to re-establish representative football in the borough for primary school children.

There hasn’t been an Under 11 Town Team for a number of years now; however this is set to change in the upcoming academic year. Over 70 boys from 27 of the borough’s primary schools were nominated to attend trials for selection to the squad over the spring months.

Following a rigorous three-stage trial process, a final squad of 24 boys has been selected to represent the borough. The team will play matches against other Merseyside Schools Associations including Liverpool, Wirral and Sefton in the upcoming academic year whilst also entering further regional and national competitions.

As a celebration of their selection, the squad, and their teachers, were invited to Goodison Park at the end of the last school year for a squad photograph session. Whilst there, they had a tour of the stadium and had the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a professional footballer.

Former Northern Ireland International footballer, David Campbell, whose coaching staff will be coaching the team commented, “There is tremendous talent amongst this group of youngsters, the standard is excellent and their attitude looks good. I am sure St Helens Borough will have a representative team that they can be proud of”.

Danny Bacon, Sports Development Officer at St Helens Council, highlighted the importance of re-establishing the team, “It is fantastic that the schoolboys team has been brought back. To represent your borough in sport is an honour and something to aspire to. We look forward to working with these talented boys throughout the upcoming season”.
