Another Gold for Olivia Hussey

Amateur boxer Olivia Hussey took another step on her journey toward joining the national team by winning a Gold medal out in Poland, representing Great Britain for the first time.

Olivia said “Well what can I say the Gold is coming home! No one understands how much this means to me.”

“My debut for Team GB couldn’t have gone any better. After a tough few weeks and some upsets I stayed positive and it’s paid off”

“I can’t thank everyone for the support you have all gave me means the absolute world, what an experience it’s been and another gold to add to my collection”

We spoke with Amanda Groarke, who is Liv’s coach at Hook and Jab gym in Warrington where she trains. Amanda said “Olivia was representing GB in her first ever tournament only being given the opportunity at a few week’s notice.”

“We received a phone call a few weeks back asking if Olivia could attend a GB training camp at the EIS in Sheffield for an assessment as well as an up and coming tournament in Poland. Obviously we said shed be there and ready to box for GB.”

“After winning the European Gold medal we had given Olivia a few weeks off from training, although this was cut short on receiving the call. As the true athlete she is she was straight back in the gym, even sacrificing her family holiday to train.”

“Once again Olivia’s preparation has been exceptional, sparring GB boxer Crystal Barker, ex Olympian and GB boxer now professional Natasha Jonas as well as ex England boxer and European medallist now professional Stacy Copeland two of Great Britain’s most experienced and talented boxers so we couldn’t ask for better sparring. Olivia has matured and developed so much in such a short space of time her strength increasing by over 50% making her punch power higher now than in her last tournament, this showing with the outcome her stopping her first opponent in the first round then giving her opponent in the final standing counts and reducing her to tears!”

“The tournament was the Silesian 2017 hosted by Poland consisting of four days of female boxing at both youth and senior level with countries entering from as far as Australia, China tipai as well as well as countries from all over Europe.”

“Olivia boxed her debut contest for GB against Poland’s Klaudia Fitrzyk. Olivia totally dominated the round pressuring her opponent instantly giving her a standing count, the referee let the round continue resulting in another two standing counts Olivia completely overpowering her opponent resulting in a first round stoppage and well deserving win.”

“The final was like deja vu of the European final, boxing the home favourite and Polish prospect Natalia Barbusinska, Olivia knew what her tactics were against her tall southpaw opponent and kept to them, giving her a standing count in the first then bringing her opponent to tears with her excruciating body shots the referee letting the bout continue.“

“The contest continued with Olivia dominating the rounds with powerful punches hurting her opponent although the referee letting it continue, Olivia displayed an outstanding performance totally dominating the three rounds defending any punch thrown back, the referee allowing the contest to go the distance then awarding it to Olivia on a split decision to the GB coaches astonishment! Although beating the home favourite in her own country, we were happy we had the win and another Gold medal for such a talented young lady.”

“We can not put into words how proud we all are at Hook & Jab of Olivia, she is such a hard working dedicated young lady who is like a sponge absorbing and continually working on new things, she is a coaches dream and a pleasure to work with. The commitment and dedication she has displayed is inspirational.”

“Olivia will have her final assessment for the Great Britain boxing on the 20th Sept-23rd Sept where she will hopefully be given a place within the GB team and the opportunity to follow her dream.”

“All coaches and fellow team mates wish Olivia all the luck in the world with her GB assessment and her very prosperous future within boxing.”
