On Friday evening many magnificent local heroes were recognised at this year’s glittering and glamorous Liverpool ECHO Awards ceremony at the Rum Warehouse in Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel.
And one of those was 11 year-old George Mathias from St Helens, who won the Merseyrail Young Personality Award for his Run With George Campaign.
George is running a mile every month to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity, after the hospital saved the life of his younger brother, James, who was born prematurely. So far he has raised a fantastic £30,000.
George said “I’m so excited to have been one of the winners at the Echo Awards. It was an amazing night and I was a little bit nervous, so it was really nice to hear my name read out. I really want to thank everyone who has supported me because I would never have won without them”
His parents Richard and Sue said “We are delighted that George has received this honour. There are so many people doing amazing things to make a difference, so to even be nominated was a huge honour. George insisted on taking his little brother James onto the stage when he received his award, because he was his inspiration for starting his charity. We were really proud to see them both on stage together”
George has also been shortlisted for an Award at the North West Charity Awards in the Young Charity Ambassador of the Year category. Read more => https://www.sthelensunlimited.co.uk/2017/08/16/north-west-charity-of-the-year-awards-finalists/
The ECHO Awards, which were presented by original Big Brother winner Craig Phillips and Hollyoaks actress Jessica Fox and featured a three course dinner and live entertainment, celebrated all that is great about our region.
George has enlisted the help of many famous people for his Run With George Campaign. Here are a few of their tweets congratulating him upon his win.
