George Mathias is an 11 year old from Eccleston who is raising money for Alder Hey Hospital. The Hospital saved his younger brother James’ life after he went into a coma shortly after being born prematurely.
George decided to run a mile for each month that he has spent with six-year-old James. And this became the Run With George campaign which has so far raised tens of thousands of pounds for the hospital.
Here is what’s been happening during September

15th September – George Wins Young Personality Award
Many magnificent local heroes were recognised at this year’s glittering and glamorous Liverpool ECHO Awards ceremony at the Rum Warehouse in Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel. And one of those was George, who won the Merseyrail Young Personality Award for his Run With George Campaign.
George said “I’m so excited to have been one of the winners at the Echo Awards. It was an amazing night and I was a little bit nervous, so it was really nice to hear my name read out. I really want to thank everyone who has supported me because I would never have won without them”
His parents Richard and Sue said “We are delighted that George has received this honour. There are so many people doing amazing things to make a difference, so to even be nominated was a huge honour. George insisted on taking his little brother James onto the stage when he received his award, because he was his inspiration for starting his charity. We were really proud to see them both on stage together”
The ECHO Awards, which were presented by original Big Brother winner Craig Phillips and Hollyoaks actress Jessica Fox and featured a three course dinner and live entertainment, celebrated all that is great about our region.
