Another Gold Medal For Olivia Hussey

Olivia Hussey has once again performed to the highest level winning another Gold medal representing Great Britain in the Balkan Boxing Tournament in Bulgaria.

We spoke with Amanda Groarke, Olivia’s coach at Hook and Jab Boxing Gym in Warrington to find out more about her latest achievement.

Amanda said “Olivia who has had an unbelievable year, now undefeated since joining the club. What an achievement for the young 17 year old after almost giving up the sport only twelve months ago.”

“After winning a Gold medal in the European championships her boxing career has exceeded all her expectations, after winning the European Gold Olivia was given assessments for the Great Britain squad, her performance in Poland last month where again Olivia won Gold in her GB debut secured her a place on team GB.”

“Olivia being one of eight GB boxers in the team to box in Bulgaria where she was the first boxer to get the gold and the only one to box three consecutive days against some of the highest ranked boxers in the world.”

“What made this even more special Olivia lost her nan on the Friday before she flew to Bulgaria on the Monday, although heart broken that her nan had lost her battle with cancer Olivia was more determined than ever coming in the gym that weekend knowing the importance of her final preparation. Adamant that she would box her heart out and bring that gold home in memory of her nan who always supported her throughout her career, for Olivia to achieve this is just inspirational.”

“Olivia met her team mates in London on Monday before flying out to Bulgaria on Tuesday. Olivia’s first opponent was the hosting countries champion Melis Yonuzova of Bulgaria.”

“This was a tough contest as the Bulgarian was a rough fighter who fouling Olivia throughout the bout, almost wrestling her at one point trying to stop Olivia boxing frustrating her, although Olivia was to compose herself regaining her shape moving well displaying pure heart and grit winning the contest and on to box the following day in the semi finals.”

“The semi final bout was against Russia’s Nataliya Sychugova the two had met previously in the Europeans where Olivia had won on a split decision, this time however Olivia was stronger than ever before, boxing the southpaw opponent with flurries of combinations, completely out boxing the Russian taking her to a well deserved 5-0 unanimous win and a place in the final.”

“Going into the final Olivia felt calm and confident, knowing nothing and no one was going to stop her getting that Gold. Her opponent was Poland’s Patrycja Borys, again Olivia was to display her class completely out boxing her aggressive fighter style opponent with perfectly timed combinations catching the Polish girl straight through the middle another fantastic performance and another well deserved Gold Medal for the young Hook & Jab boxer.”

“With the best preparation for her up and coming World championships hosted in India in November where she will also be celebrating her 18th birthday whilst in India with only one thing on her mind, to bring home the World Gold medal.”

“We can not put into words how proud we all are of Olivia she is a true inspiration and role model not only to her fellow Hook & Jab boxers and team but to every young person as Olivia would have never dreamt this time last year she would be where she is now achieving more in twelve months than ever though possible, although we all knew she could do this as she is so determined focused and works so hard in the gym we do believe this young lady is special with so much more to come and her dream of being an Olympic Champion is within her sights.”
