St Helens Hockey 2 – 2 Didsbury Hockey
For the second week running St Helens come away from a game knowing they should have 3 points to show for their efforts. In poor conditions they controlled the game for long spells in the second half and could, maybe should have closed the gap on the top teams in thr division.
St Helens started brightly with a goal scored by a Phil Travis from a short corner but before the half was over Didsbury had scored 2 of their own to take a 2-1 lead into half time. The talk at half time was positive, St Helens knew that there was something in the game for them and went back out looking to grab all 3 points. It’s probably fair to say that St Helens had all the possession and territory in the second half and Alan Travis was on the end of a long ball from Paul Horton to level things up.
From then on they went looking for the winner and restricted Didsbury to long balls from the back. Unfortunately the third goal didn’t happen and both teams left with a point each.
Nevertheless a point against a previously unbeaten and high scoring team isn’t the worst result. St Helens knew going into it the game that they’d need something from the game to keep hopes of a promotion alive and the point does that. Next week they travel to Horwich who lead the league after the weekends games, so more of the same required!
History of the club
St Helens Hockey club was only recently formed (2016) and gained entrance into division 6 in the North West Hockey league. The club is made up of a mix of players, some completely new to the game, players who hadn’t played for 10+ years and players who’ve played league hockey in recent years.
The Hockey season runs from September to March and the club played its first ever league game on 24th September 2016 home against Bury winning comprehensively 9 – 0.
That set the tone for the 2016/2017 season with the team going unbeaten throughout the year winning 13 and drawing 1.
The club headed into division 5 for the 2017/2018 season from September 2017 onwards
Backed by local Sponsors Paxton Harris Garden Room Design they’re also looking to develop the club over the coming years and introduce hockey to those who perhaps haven’t tried it before or are looking to get back into it.
A second team is in the pipeline but to aid that they do need new faces and are encouraging people to head down and give it a try.
There is currently only have 1 men’s team and the club are looking to attract players from 16 onwards down to give it a try. They were awarded a National Lottery/Sport England grant to fund equipment for new starters to use, so there’s really no reason not to give it a go!
Training is on Tuesday nights at Rainford High between 8pm and 9pm.
