Senior Road User Event To Pull Up In Rainford This December

A popular, free to attend Merseyside Senior Road Safety event is to take place in Rainford this December.

St Helens Council, as the lead on Merseyside for senior road users is promoting a number of Merseyside wide initiatives to address the growing problem of senior road users, aged 60 and over, being involved in road traffic collisions. The council’s Road Safety Team is delivering a number of events funded by The Merseyside Road Safety Partnership in an attempt to reduce this increasing number of collisions.

At this event, a number of presentations will be delivered by key stakeholders, including Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. Attendees will be given advice on prescribed drugs and medicine driving – as well as advice on winter driving and the benefits of public transport.

In addition, the event will be addressing the increasing number of incidents involving pedestrians within this senior road user group, as this is now becoming an area of great concern.

Attendees will also be given details of the very popular ‘Drive Safely for Longer’ course which is offered free to residents in Merseyside over 60 years of age. The course provides information, tips and advice to allow them to continue driving – as the name of the course suggests – to drive safely for longer.

“Statistics show that one in seven road traffic collisions in Merseyside now involve a driver over the age of 65,” said St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Green Smart and Sustainable Borough, Terry Shields.

“I would encourage anyone who may benefit from this Drive Safely for Longer course to attend one of the number of Senior Road User events that are planned, as we’ve been able to reach out to so many senior road users already, from which the feedback has been extremely positive.’’

This Senior Road User event will be held at Rainford Village Hall on Thursday 7 December, from 10:00am until 2:00pm. A free hot lunch and refreshments will be provided.
