Central Library in St Helens town centre will remain closed to the public until further notice.
It was hoped that the library, which has been closed since the back-end of March for essential maintenance works, would reopen in December.
However, the extensive nature of the repair works will require reconstruction to both the inside and outside of the building. Extensive work to the exterior of the building is required to stop further damage being caused from water ingress.
The reopening date has had to be put back and is at this stage unknown. The cost of the repairs is significant and the works will take a long time to complete.
To avoid causing further inconvenience to library users, an alternative town centre location is currently being investigated by the council – and a number of other libraries in the Borough are operating with longer opening hours.
Nearby Peter Street Library (1.3 miles away) and Parr Library (1.7 miles away) are open for longer on certain days, along with Haydock Library and Thatto Heath Library which have extended opening hours until 4pm on Saturdays.
Eccleston Library will also remain open for longer on a Tuesday (10am -7pm), as will Rainhill Library on a Wednesday (10am -7pm).
The council apologises for any inconvenience caused, and will provide updates on the situation in due course.
