International Volunteers Day

It’s International Volunteer Day today.  If you volunteer, we’d just like to say that we think you’re pretty awesome. You are making a difference to the world around you. Keep up the great work!

When I talk to people about volunteering I am sometimes met with responses such as, “why would you want to do that, its not your job”. The answer I more often than not give is “why would you not want to volunteer, when did we stop caring about the world around us”.

Our streets, community, neighbourhoods, people around us are all important. Find something you care about and make a difference. I reckon that many people feel that have no power, disenfranchised, disconnected from people and places around them. But you do have power to make things happen and volunteering is just one way to do that. Don’t wait for someone else to make a difference, you can be the person that does…..

Often you here people speak of “giving something back”, which can make you that the reason you need to give something back is because you took something in the first place. I like to think that the reason to volunteer is just because we can.

Giving of yourself is one of the most powerful things in the world.

Winston Churchill once said “we make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” and I agree.

As well as helping to make a difference, it’s fun, you’ll meet lots of new people and make new friends. You’ll gain valuable skills in teamwork, leadership, learning new stuff as well as making use of those skills you already have or perhaps didnt realise you know you possessed.
