The Winter Solstice, a poem by Yvonne Mattocks.
The winter Solstice is upon us now.
The shortest day is here at last,
as light denied for far too long
creeps ever so slowly along once dappled boughs.
The bells that Herald a brand new morn
ring out with expectation and new thoughts born,
as once again the seasons change
and the promise of new beginnings hangs in the air
and renewed hope replaces despair…
Today, December 21, the annual astronomical phenomenon marks the shortest day of the year.
After today (21st December), we will begin to see longer periods of daylight as our planet rotates towards the sun.
On the shortest day of the year, the sun is due to set very early, sinking below the horizon here in St Helens at 3.53pm
