EXHIBITIONS AT THE WORLD OF GLASS MUSEUM, ARTS AND VISITOR CENTRE

Islands for the Lost – Jane Barwood

Godfrey Pilkington Gallery
Saturday 20th January – Friday 9th March 2018

Many of the works in this exhibition were inspired by the artist’s walks in Anglesey, North Wales and the North-West coast of England. The paintings often feature lonely buildings in the landscape. The buildings represent the ephemeral place of people within the eternal natural world. The paintings explore ideas of loneliness and connection, communication and isolation, alienation and belonging. The settings are based on reality but are not realistic. Instead the artist uses colour, texture and form to evoke atmosphere and emotion rather than photographic realism.

Jane Barwood has a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting. She has won several awards including the national Mussini Oil Painting People’s Choice Award in 2017, the Python Art Prize in 2013 and was awarded the Heart of Glass Studio Bursary in 2014. Jane has completed public art commissions and was previously Artist in Residence at Liverpool Hope University. She regularly exhibits regionally and nationally and has paintings in private and public collections, including The World of Glass and JD Wetherspoon. She lives and works in St Helens and is very active in the local arts community.

Inspired by her coastal walks, Jane Barwood uses images of buildings in the landscape in her paintings to explore ideas of loneliness and connection, communication and isolation, alienation and belonging.

There are places I’ll remember all my life, Though some have changed
Some forever, not for better, Some have gone and some remain.
To celebrate the Towns 150th Anniversary this exhibition will explore the ideas surrounding these very popular song lyrics. The exhibition will showcase pieces from the boroughs collection that depict the town of St. Helens over the years.

Memories

Mezzanine Level
20th January – 9th March

“To touch the past is to relive the memory of a life and time gone by”

The future is influenced by the past in everything we do and sometimes it can be the smallest thing which triggers a feeling, an emotion, a sense of being , a place or wellbeing.   Using artefacts from our museum collections we look back over 150 years of personal donations which chart the life of people of the borough.
