Carmel Student Wins National Essay Writing Competition

Lower Sixth student Katie Kennedy won the EDUK (Equality and Diversity UK) Black History Month essay competition recently. During Black History Month, we remember and celebrate the important people from the past and also who contribute to and help our society today.

Katie, who studies Drama & Theatre, Politics and History, decided to write her essay about Marsha P. Johnson to answer the question: Which black hero do you admire most and why?

Suffering from absence epilepsy herself, Katie is passionate about equality for people regardless of their ethnicity, disability, sexuality or religious background. As an aspiring actor, she is particularly keen to promote equality within performing arts.

Katie said ‘I entered the competition because I wanted to raise awareness about people who were disadvantaged in history. I wrote about Marsha P. Johnson because she was part of the the LGBTQ+ community as well as being a Person of Colour (POC). I wanted to let people know about her upbringing and show how she was resilient, fighting for a cause despite the hardships.’
