George Mathias is an 11 year old lad from Eccleston who is raising money for Alder Hey Hospital.
His little brother James was born seven weeks premature, spent five days in a coma and was close to death. Thanks to the staff at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool, he made a full recovery.
George was so grateful, he wanted to find a way to help the hospital treat other children. His dad Richard told him if he came up with an idea, he’d help make it happen.
George decided to run a mile for every month James had been alive, thanks to the doctors and nurses at Alder Hey.
So far George has raised over £55,000 in sponsorship and from auctioning off signed t-shirts he has received from well-known supporters including John Bishop and Steven Gerrard. A specially-heated cot for premature babies in the Special Care Baby Unit has been purchased using some of the monies raised so far.
George has won a few awards along the way as way including Pride of St Helens and the prestigious Pride of Britain Awards.
George’s Dad, Richard said “George has re-set his target and is aiming to run the distance of a marathon for every year he has had James, so that’s 208 miles.”
“We’ve kicked off 2018 with some great runs with Dermot O’Leary, Michel Roux, Naga Munchetty and Sam Quek, and there are plenty more on the way.”
“We are also looking to do a run at Saints in the next few weeks so as many people as possible can join George on a run. He just wants to raise as much money as possible to say thank you to Alder Hey for his little brother”
