St Helens Hockey Club – Match Report 24th March

Southport 3 – 2 St Helens

In the penultimate game of the season we travelled to Southport in a game that could ultimately mean all or nothing based on the Urmston game elsewhere.

The game was a tight contest throughout with goals from Lewis Robinson and Mick Maloney giving us a 2-1 lead until Southport were able to grab a couple giving them a 3-2 lead which they held until full time.

The Southport team was a much stronger one than earlier in the season, however they came away with nothing to show for the result as they’ve since been penalised and docked the 3 points as a result of their first team failing to fulfill their fixture on the day…..the connection between their firsts not playing their game and us facing a stronger than usual 2nd team though I expect is just coincidence…..

In any case Urmston picked up the 3 points they needed to secure 2nd spot and takes away any chance of a promotion for this season. We go to Rochdale today for the final league game of the season, a win will take us to a 3rd place finish which whilst disappointing, shouldn’t be looked upon too badly.
