Torus Plans To Boost Provision Of Homes For Older People

Torus has received planning permission for extra care housing in St Helens, at the junction of Atlas Street and Standish Street, include 109 one bedroom and 21 two bedroom apartments, a bistro, hairdressers and extensive landscaped gardens.

Torus development director, Bill Lacey, said: “Most developers focus on homes for first time buyers and growing families. Whilst that’s important, and indeed forms a large part of our development programme, we believe that there’s a real need for later life homes too.”

“Our specialist housing is tailor made for people aged 55 and over. Innovatively and sensitively planned and designed, these homes are developed as communities where older people can live sociable, fulfilling and healthy lives.”

The Atlas Street housing has an anticipated start date Spring 2018.

The new site is part of a wider commitment to the provision of quality, affordable homes and services for people aged 55 and over, that has seen the group purchase 6 sheltered schemes in St Helens and a further scheme in Ormskirk. This enhances Torus’ offer of affordable, specialist housing for older people. The group now owns and manages around 2,000 bungalows and apartments for people over 55 in St Helens and Warrington.

In addition to tailored homes, Helena Partnerships and Golden Gates Housing Trust, who form the Torus group, have also created a support package for tenants and residents over the age of 55 which is designed to help them live independently in their homes for longer. Thousands of older people in St Helens and Warrington now benefit from The Staying Home Service.

Torus is currently developing: bungalows for over 55s in Windle Hall and Newton le Willows and one bed apartments in Parr. A second extra care housing scheme in Padgate, Warrington will also start on site in 2018.

Bill continued: “Our vision is to provide homes for a variety of different household types; first time homes, homes for growing families and older people alike. Building the right homes, in the right places will help ensure that more people can live in a home that suits their needs, at an affordable price.”
