Latest news from St Helens Striders running club

This week’s report is by Jon-Jo Doherty.

The Striders enjoyed an hilariously themed 10k event, at ‘The Crazy Cow 10k’ in Avenham Preston. A great course in a rural environment with comedy marshals, and a superb atmosphere! Zoe Fillingham claimed the headlines with a new PB! She attributed her success stating, “the upbeat support from my teammates decisively made the difference”. Jon-Jo Doherty finished in 4th place overall, with Hannah Whittaker as the 3rd Lady to finish. 554 completed the event.  Give yourselves a ‘Pat’ on the back team Strider!

Peter Fairclough completed his 50th Parkrun, and the occasion was made even more special as it was his 30th birthday. Rachael Fairclough, unbeknownst to her husband secured huge support at the St Helens course at Victoria Park. It was a total surprise and shock to Peter who claimed to be “overwhelmed by the turnout”. He emphatically finished 2nd in the event with a new PB.

Over 300 took part, in what is a fabulous free weekly event.

Elsewhere Katie Taggart targeted yet another big performance in the Port Sunlight 10k. She’s a big hit at the Striders and was rapturously encouraged by her husband Glenn. She stated that “she’s never felt stronger. And that “under her new regime hopes to run even faster”. Kevin Winstanley amazed onlookers as he competed in both the 5k and 10k! Danny Fegan delighted family and friends as he finished 2nd veteran over 50.

Ben Lawrenson took part in the Freckleton Half Marathon. He achieved 2:40:56. In ploughing his way through farmers fields, he took in the picturesque setting. He recommends the course to fellow runners, and fully intends to attempt it again. Well done Lawro!
