Students give up their mobile phones for charity

Students from the St Helens College Directions course have come together to raise a generous £503 donation for St Helens’ Chemotherapy unit, the Lilac Centre, in order to support the great work they do with local cancer patients across the borough.

The proceeds were raised as part of their annual charity work; an initiative that has ran for the past three years on Directions, seeing a number of charities supported. This year the students opted to support local charity; The Lilac Centre, which offers holistic support to cancer patients and carers.

The fundraiser saw students give up their mobile phones for a full academic day, opening up the discussion on how reliant we are on mobile phones, social media and the internet, particularly at lunch and break times.

The event was a great success for students, seeing them collect pledges and sponsorships both at home and around the College, with a grand total of £503 raised for the charity!
