Saturday the 4th saw St Helens Sutton A.C. host and compete at the final Northern league match of the season but with only 6 female and 11 male athletes competing it looked as if it would be a tough competition.
But with a fantastic team effort Sutton managed to finish third.
On the men’s side track debutants, Will Beesley ran an impressive 400m and relay leg, while Jon-Jo Doherty mastered both the 400m hurdles and steeplechase after watching YouTube videos the night before in preparation. The ever-reliant Michael and Jonathan Causer, Daniel Lamb and Darren Scott took top positions across the sprint and field events. While Ian Conway and Michael Hughes ensured points where gained across all the throwing disciplines. In the men’s distance races, Tom Griffiths continued his superb form to take a substantial win in 800m ahead of team mate Matt Crehan, who went on to win both the 1500m and 5000m, alongside fellow athlete Jon Appleton.
In the women’s events, youngster Jess Leonard took 3rd place across both the 100m and 200m.The ever-reliable Julia Hayes and Karen Marsh took on the throws ensuring strong points were gained. And the distance races, the trio of Kelly Hamilton, Gemma Connolly and Jade Smith took on the 800, 1500 and 3000m with Connolly taking 2nd place in the 3000m and Smith running a 20 second PB in the 1500m.
Matt Crehan, St Helens Sutton A.C. Chairman praised the hard and often underappreciated work of Team Captain Chris Causer, Event Organiser Chris Dempsey and Club Membership Secretary Pam Appleton who helped to ensure the team could compete to the highest levels.
