Inspirational Student Achieves GCSE Success Despite Illness

Inspirational student, Matthew Isherwood, has spent the last two years battling leukaemia and despite his intensive treatment, has celebrated achieving 8 GCSEs (or equivalent) with his mum, including a grade 5 in Combined Science and a grade 4 in English and Maths.

Matthew aspires to be a Graphic Designer one day and is excited to be progressing to St Helens College to study Graphic Design. He said, “I was determined not to let my illness affect my studies, especially after missing such a large amount of school. The teachers and students at St Helens College 14-16 Academy have been amazing and I honestly couldn’t have got through the last two years without their support.”

Matthew’s mum added, “I am so proud of Matthew and his strength and determination to succeed. He has been through so much and the support from St Helens College 14-16 Academy has been instrumental in achieving what he has so far.”
