From the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas to the mud and slopes of the Darwen Moors, St Helens Striders have had a remarkable weekend with personal bests and club records being demolished.
Competing in the Windmill 10k on Sunday, Jon-Jo Doherty showed his class and determination as he sped to 1st place in a new club record time of 33:45. Doherty has had an exceptional racing season this year, pushing himself to greater and greater achievements.
New members Chris Hazeldine and Jackie Ellis proudly gave their Striders colours a first outing this weekend at the Cheshire 10k. This fast and flat course has serious PB potential and Hazeldine did not disappoint in a new best time of 34:31. Ellis also showed that the Strider vest is lucky, finishing strong in 1:03:22. Long-time Strider Ann Johnson continued her good form, finishing in 46:03.
Saturday saw three members take on the very challenging Howler 11 mile Remembrance run. This was a very challenging route over the Darwen Moors, run to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of the First World War. David Brisco finished in 17 th place despite getting lost and running an extra 1.5 miles! Sharon O’Connell and Vera Langley were also delighted to complete this difficult but rewarding event.
Ultra-specialist Colette Flaherty was out again completing the 40 mile Warrington Way race in 7 hours 48. Another exceptional achievement for Flaherty who is a real inspiration to many.
Finally, three Striders travelled to the bright lights of Vegas to take the club international. Gary Eccleston put in a dazzling half-marathon performance knocking a phenomenal 20 minutes off his previous best, finishing in 2:04:56. He was just pipped to the post by partner Nicky Donovan who completed the race in 2:04:08 – a personal best for her too. New member Angela Cropper, competed in both the 5k and half-marathon events finishing the 5k in 35:21 and the half-marathon in 3:01:02.
