Hamilton Crowned Queen of North West Cross Country
The final North West Cross Country League fixture of the season took place on Sunday at Birchwood Park.
The indomitable Kelly Hamilton produced a stellar performance to finish in first place in the ladies’ race. And as the final results for the league placings were totted up, it was confirmed that she had been crowned female individual league champion, delighting her teammates with this well-deserved moment of personal glory.
It was not just individual success for Striders, as the ladies’ team completed a fantastic year in cross country by finishing in 3rd place – a highest ever placing for the club. The men’s team also did the club proud with a 6th place finish in the final table.
A day earlier, Striders’ talisman Jon-Jo Doherty continued his relentless quest for honours at the Standish Hall 10k Trail Race. The result was never in doubt as Doherty stormed clear of the field to record victory in a rapid-fire 36:27.
At Oulton Park racetrack, Lynda Butchard took on the ASICS Run on Track Challenge. This three and a half hour endurance event saw runners cover as many laps of the British Superbikes venue in the time allotted. Buthchard covered an impressive 17.8 miles: a feat that Carl Fogarty himself would struggle to match without his souped-up motorcycle.
In a further boost to Striders’ prestige, four athletes have been selected to represent Merseyside in the Inter County Cross Country Championships in Loughborough. The dynamic duo of Kelly Hamilton and Rachael Fairclough will be joined by Jon-Jo Doherty and David Wilson in donning the iconic purple vest.
