Strong performances for St. Helens Sutton A.C. and English Call up for Charlie Roberts.

It’s been a great week of athletics for St. Helens Sutton A.C.
Friday night saw the rising talent of Charlie Roberts confidently secure his place in the English Schools Championships 800m final to take place the next morning. And as the best 15 & 16 year olds lined up the next morning Roberts knew exactly what his plan was to secure a medal. The 4th fastest in the field it was to be a tough race, but setting out with front running grit Roberts led through the bell in 57 seconds. As they hit the 230m to go it looked like Roberts may have been in trouble as he found himself boxed in as the kicks came, coming off the final bend in 5th place, Roberts put in his final kick blasting passed all but the favourite to take an English Schools Silver Medal and secure himself an England Vest call up.

On Sunday the Sutton seniors low on numbers rallied to try and ensure their promotion in the 3rd Northern league match of the season, especially in the women’s teams were Karen Marsh competed in 7 events, Amy Corfield, Heather Drillingcourt and Jade Smith competed in 6 events all securing great points for the club. Earlier in the week several Sutton runners took on the Druid Fell race with Jon-Jo Doherty winning against an impressive field with Greg Carns in 52nd
