Penkford School Umbrella Project goes live at the World of Glass

Penkford School is working in close partnership with the World of Glass this July to celebrate neurodiversity by supporting the ADHD Foundation’s 2019 Umbrella Project.

The ADHD Foundation is an award-winning UK charity, based in Liverpool.

This summer it celebrates its third annual Umbrella Project with four public art installations that will see hundreds of brightly coloured umbrellas suspended above the streets and public spaces.

The project makes visible what people often do not see because it doesn’t fit with the narrow stereotypes and disabling perceptions of those with cognitive differences.

This year, the campaign is encouraging schools around the region to take part and Penkford School has been showing its support by suspending more than 20 umbrellas in the foyer of World of Glass.
The installation aims to encourage conversations about the condition and celebrate the gifts, abilities and employability of those who are neurodiverse.

Ron Helsby from World of Glass said, “It’s great to welcome Penkford pupils to the World of Glass! We are pleased to showcase a diverse array of Art from our local community to celebrate neurodiversity in this, the 50th Anniversary year of PRIDE. The pupils’ art work will be displayed in our brand new gallery next to the PRIDE art work completed by  the “Over the Rainbow” Group.”

Julie Johnson, Headteacher of Penkford SEMH School said “Penkford School is a special school for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health issues. Many of our pupils are diagnosed with ADHD and we work closely with the ADHD Foundation and other multi agencies to strive for better outcomes for our pupils. We’re thrilled to be part of this exciting project”.

Penkford School has previously been awarded ADHD Friendly School of the Year and has been highly praised for innovative and imaginative inclusion projects. Julie has addressed the National ADHD Conference, sharing her experiences of setting up an on-site ADHD Clinic, an on-site Mental Health Clinic, an on-site Counselling service and also utilising the skill set of Military Mentors.

Penkford School’s latest trailblazing initiative is the launch of a school based Sleep Support Clinic. This clinic is the first of its kind in the country and the focus is helping pupils with ADHD who have chronic sleep issues.
