Silver for Smith at England Championships
After a week of scorching sun, by the time the weekend had come round and the England Athletics Championships began at Sportcity, the rain had begun. Jade Smith took to a very wet and windy track, competing in the Para Athletics 1500m. After a quick start Smith continued to run well in second place, but over the final 400m had an exciting battle with the Southend on Sea, before pulling away to secure second with a 5 second PB of 5:14 which ranks her 6th in the world for T13 Classification.
Earlier in the week a host of St. Helens Sutton A.C. athletes headed to Trafford, first up was Matt Crehan and Tom Griffiths in the 3000m, Crehan finished 3rd in 8:42 and Griffiths 6th in 9:14. In the 800m Tom Upton ran a new PB of 2:08 to finish 2nd and Amy Corfield just missed breaking her PB with 2:35 followed by Smith in 2:38. In the 1500m Dave Twigg ran 4:14 after trying to waken up a slow starting race. And Crehan in race 2 finished first in 4:07.
Wednesday saw a St. Helens Sutton A.C. team win the Horrick Hill Race with Jon-Jo Doherty 1st followed by Griffiths, 2nd Ste Anders 7th. Doherty and Griffiths then went one-two again on Friday at Knowsley’s Fab 4 series with Chris Birkett in 12th. While in the kids mile race Bobby Birkett had a battle for the win, finishing second just seconds behind the winner, he was followed home by Harry Griffiths (5th), Lilly Birkett 5th Girl (11th) and Charlie Griffiths (19th).
