Overnight closures in place at Pewfall as phase two of junction improvement scheme gets underway

Motorists are advised that a section of the East Lancashire Road will be closed overnight this weekend, as the second phase of a major junction improvement scheme gets underway.

The A580 westbound and Stanley Bank Way will be closed on the evening of Friday 12 June and the A580 eastbound and Liverpool Road on the evening of Sunday 14 June, between the hours of 8:00pm – 6:00am.

The closures are to allow changes to be made to the current traffic management in place at Pewfall Junction, Haydock, which is undergoing a transformation to increase junction capacity in all directions – and improve safety through dedicated pedestrian and cycle crossings.

Works on site are progressing well and have continued during the coronavirus pandemic – in line with government guidelines – with the lower layers of the new bound carriageway completed in recent weeks.

Phase two – which will mainly see improvement works carried out on the A580 central reservation – will take around seven weeks to complete, with suitable diversions in place.

Pewfall Junction Improvement Scheme is being funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Local Growth Fund through a £2.6m investment, with local developers contributing £500,000. St Helens Council will fund the remaining balance to help support economic growth and employment opportunities in the borough.

Local Growth Funding is awarded to the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and invested through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Strategic Investment Fund.

The whole scheme is expected to be completed by late September 2020.
