Forty-four schools from across the borough have been recognised for their commitment to school sport during the first two terms of the academic year through the School Games Recognition Award.
The School Games Recognition Award acknowledges the engagement of schools in the opportunities provided to them and for their commitment to ensuring that pupils are engaged in the national School Games programme.
During the first two school terms, St Helens Council’s Sports Development team has delivered 106 competitions and events – and engaged with more than 6,000 of the borough’s pupils in school sport, either through playing or officiating, as well as delivering sports leadership training to pupils across the borough and providing training and development for school staff to develop their provision within their school.
A spokesperson for St Helens Borough council said “It’s great to see so many of our local schools receive the School Games Recognition Award for their commitment to developing and providing sporting opportunities for all pupils.
“More than ever, it is vital that we ensure that our children and young people are active and develop strong social skills, both of which can be achieved through taking part in sport and physical activity at school. St Helens Borough has delivered some sporting superstars over the years, and that hard work usually starts at a young age.
“Figures released late last year revealed that people in St Helens Borough are more active than ever – with more than 93,000 completing at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical exercise a week. Programmes like this are a fantastic way to help us increase these figures even further.”
During the current school closures, Sports Development has continued to provide opportunities for pupils to remain active through the delivery of online, virtual challenges. A further award will be presented to schools that have engaged in this programme of activities at the end of the summer term.
